The Gospel of Luke – Week 32
Jesus, The Sign of Jonah, And A Lamp
As Jesus continued to travel and teach and heal, the crowds continued to gather and follow him. At one point, after hearing Jesus teach, the people start asking for a sign from Jesus to prove who he is. While this might seem harmless, Jesus has given many signs and many proofs that he was the Messiah, and that what he was teaching came from God. Rather than doing a “magic trick” to prove this yet again, he confronts his Jewish listeners with a couple of challenges from their Jewish history, and an analogy of a lamp shining.
The Jews knew well the references of Jonah the prophet, and of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, and Jesus reminded them that really listening to God’s word and taking it seriously will cause people to return to God in humility and repentance. He mentions the lampstand to talk about the difference between simply hearing an external message versus allowing God’s word to penetrate their hearts and cause real change. Take some time to listen and see how it might apply to you today!
