The Gospel of Luke – Week 17
Jesus Demonstrates Power Over Death
Thus far in Luke’s gospel, we have seen Jesus heal the blind and lame, cure people of leprosy and other life-threatening illness, doing things that no else could do. In this text, we see Jesus do something he’s not yet done up to this point: raise someone from the dead. As Jesus encounters a funeral procession on it’s way toward a cemetery, he sees a woman who has been widowed and has now lost her son. The impacts on her life as a woman with no way to keep a home or make an income were immeasurable. Jesus sees this situation and is filled with compassion. With just a few words, he commands the woman’s son to come back to life, and just like that, it happens. The people are stunned, and word of this miracle spreads throughout the region. What do we do with this story? We practice faith in God not to get the “benefits” of God, but rather, to get God himself. Yet, this story gives us a foreshadowing of Jesus own death and resurrection, and moreover, it gives us hope that Jesus cares when we are hurting, and that we can and should exercise faith in God’s power and compassion over the difficult situations of our lives. Christians are to live lives of faith in action.
