The Gospel of Luke – Week 14

Luke 6:27-36

Upside-Down Inside-Out Part 2

There is a lyric from the song “Confession” by My Epic that talks about the fact that God can take our selfishness, failure, and pride, and through Jesus, can turn us into “objects of grace” in the world. In today’s text, Jesus teaches on the ridiculous, upside-down, inside-out grace of God.

The big idea into today’s teaching is this: Jesus instructions on love are absolutely ludicrous, absolutely BACKWARDS from how the world tells us we ought to treat people who treat us badly. In full rebellion against what we want when we are hurt or frustrated, Jesus asks his disciples to live a life of love that shows a RIDICULOUS LOVE OF OUR ENEMIES.

Why would Jesus ask us to do this? Because this is what Romans 5:6-8 tells us that God did for us in sending his son to die for our sin. Jesus calls us to love others in such a way, particularly our enemies and those who treat us badly, that they walk away wondering how we could possibly show love in the face of hate or mistreatment. This is the way the of God’s Kingdom.
